<p>3﻿moji Hunt is the second part of 3moji&#39;s planned roadmap. As an upgradeable NFT, 3moji is not bound by fixed traits. Instead, holders can upgrade their base NFT with accessories such as caps, hairstyles, sunglasses, facial hair, and more. </p>
<p>T﻿he hunt is inspired by the popular mobile game, Pokemon Go! 3moji players can go around their locality and map to hunt for accessories hidden away at major landmarks and use them to upgrade their 3moji avatar. </p>

<h2 id="w-hy-did-we-create-a-self-whitelist-system">W﻿hy did we create a self whitelist system?</h2>
<p>3﻿moji is an ambitious take on what NFTs can be, challenging the existing standards of NFTs in terms of tech, utility, and community. </p>
<p>3moji was built by a team of Solana NFT fans that were tired of the whitelist grind meta, only to see projects tank after mint. The application meta, started by y00ts, was an interesting way to challenge the grind. However, in our opinion, it only made the situation worse. Instead of democratizing the routes to obtain whitelists, it further obstructed the eco-system, favoring the top dogs while ignoring the masses that make up the community. </p>
<p>Self Whitelist is our answer to the whitelist conundrum. No one should grind for days to get a whitelist. No one should need thousands of followers to get a whitelist. All you need is genuine appreciation and excitement for what we&#39;re building. </p>

<p>3moji is an upgradable avatar system. It&#39;s built on the <a href="https://metablocks.world/">Meta Blocks protocol</a>. The protocol provides scalable upgrades. <a href="https://3moji.app/blog/3moji-avatars-scale-better">3moji avatars can grow forever</a>. You start with a base (head) and buy accessories to upgrade your avatar.</p>

<p>Because a project can launch their line of 3moji accessories. This will help their community (and 3moji) community to express themselves using stickers from the said project. </p>

<p>Any project can launch their line of accessories that adhere to 3moji standards. These accessories are sold as regular NFTs. For example, SMART SEA SOCIETY launched a hat and a mask that resembles their main character:</p>

<p>A member of the server can start using the bot immediately. If she chooses to buy accessories, and a 3moji base head, the bot will update the stickers to match her wallet.</p>

<p>Million Dollar JPGs are all over Instagram and Twitter. Even traditional media houses run news about ridiculously priced NFTs all the time. But what makes an NFT valuable ? Is it the JPEG artwork?</p>
<p>In this post, we&#39;ll dig deeper into why and how NFTs become valuable. We&#39;ll also classify NFTs as depending on whether they provide &quot;access&quot; to a community or a &quot;utility&quot;.</p>
<h2 id="insane-prices-are-due-to-rise-of-crypto">Insane prices are due to rise of crypto</h2>
<p>Notable NFTs like <a href="https://cryptopunks.app/">Cryptopunks</a> popped up in 2018. At that time Ethereum traded for 100 USD a pop. An NFT that sold for 20 ETH would cost 2000 USD. But in 2021, the price of Ethereum shot up to 3000 USD. So the same NFT would not cost 60000 USD. </p>
<p>There is always an appreciation in the price of the NFT, but the major value held by OG projects comes from the rise in the price of the underlying token.</p>
<p>The NFTs were not as valuable when they were sold. Getting in early yielded tremendous returns. This is why it is common for flippers to hustle to get whitelist spots so they can get early. </p>
<h2 id="new-projects-dont-work-just-because-of-the-art">New projects don&#39;t work just because of the art</h2>
<p>Crypto Kitties and Crypto Punks are two of the most notable old projects in the NFT space. Kitties was a breeding game and the Punks had a <a href="https://www.coindesk.com/learn/cryptopunks-cryptocats-and-cryptokitties-how-they-started-and-how-theyre-going/">story to back them</a>. But this is not the trend anymore. Projects need more than art to be successful. The added benefits come in the form of &quot;utility&quot; or &quot;access&quot;.</p>
<h3 id="access">Access</h3>
<p>Holding an NFT like <a href="https://boredapeyachtclub.com/#/">BAYC</a>, gives you access to their private club. This lets you talk and collaborate with other members. The club also spots early opportunities in the NFT market and shares insights with the members. </p>
<p>It&#39;s common for new projects to give free whitelist spots to established NFT projects. This allows the holders of these &quot;access&quot; based NFTs to get into other projects early. Getting in early generates more profits for the holders and the cycle continues. </p>
<p>The &quot;access&quot; also comes in the form of offline events. Some famous projects known for their access are <a href="https://veefriends.com/">Vee Friends</a> and <a href="https://g.money/manifesto">Admit One</a>. </p>
<p>Established influencers and musicians who launch their NFTs are also a form of access based NFTs. Holding such NFTs might provide you access to exclusive events or free upgrades.</p>
<h3 id="utility">Utility</h3>
<p>Some NFTs are tools. They are valuable on their own and don&#39;t need to provide additional &quot;access&quot;. Game NFTs are a great example of &quot;utility&quot; based NFTs. </p>
<p>The &quot;utility&quot; focused NFTs might also provide &quot;access&quot;, but the actual value is derived from the NFT itself. Such NFTs are less in number because NFT protocol is primitive and doesn&#39;t allow for building rich applications. But this is changing slowly. <a href="https://aurory.io/">Aurory</a>, <a href="https://3moji.app">3moji</a> and <a href="https://stepn.com/">StepN</a> are good examples of &quot;utility&quot; based NFTs.</p>

<p>Building such a protocol is a massive endeavour and requires capital and resources. Raising capital enabled us to build a team that can create such a protocol. It also helps us build the community around our idea. </p>

Why did we raise capital for an NFT project?

<p>It&#39;s a huge sum for us that will help us but only a few pennies given the booming state of the NFT ecosystem. <br>This seed round will help us build and launch the first version of 3moji. In the long run, it will enable NFTs to transition from their current static and rigid state, to one that is upgradeable and composable. </p>

<p>There are two types of drops that you can mint for your 3moji.</p>
<p><strong>First Party Drops</strong>: First Party Drops are built and sold by 3moji.</p>
<p><strong>Third Party Drops:</strong> Third Party Drops are built and sold by artists, projects, influencers, and other third parties. The creator is entitled to all of the revenue generated from a third party drop. Each third party drop goes through an in-depth quality check by the 3moji team. So it doesn&#39;t matter if you&#39;re buying first party drops or third party drops, your avatar will always look fly.</p>
<p>As a third party creator, you can also set the mint price of your drop in your project&#39;s native SPL token.</p>

<p>Traditional fixed collection NFTs provide a limited utility beyond mint. One of the reasons for this is that NFTs cannot be changed easily. In the last few months, many projects and games have come up with novel ideas to enhance their NFTs.</p>
<p>We are excited to see the direction the industry is taking. But as a company deeply invested in the NFT space, we understand the limitations of NFT avatars. NFTs are not upgradable. Which means that you cannot use it for expressing yourself in the metaverse.</p>

<h2 id="traditional-modes-of-upgradation">Traditional Modes of upgradation</h2>
<p>Currently there are 2 main ways in which an NFT can upgrade or compose:</p>

<li>By changing the metadata, which burns the original</li>
<li>Using a &quot;serum&quot;, which creates a new NFT</li>
</ol>
<p>Both methods above have problems. </p>
<p>The first one lead&#39;s to loss of predictable value. When you change the metadata, the original NFT is lost. Such metadata changes are also hard to reverse, ie. if you buy an accessory, you can never sell it.</p>
<p>The second one is not a true upgrade. The original NFT stays intact, and a new NFT is generated. This doesn&#39;t scale well, if you want to build avatars like 3moji.</p>
<h2 id="3moji-avatars-upgrade-with-meta-nfts">3moji avatars upgrade with meta NFTs</h2>
<p>Unlike the other modes of upgradation, 3moji uses the <a href="https://metablocks.world/">Meta Blocks protocol</a>.</p>
<p>It starts with you buying a &quot;base&quot;, which is a regular NFT. Then you can buy &quot;accessories&quot; which is a regular NFT too. The upgradation happens by sending the base and the accessories to a smart contract. </p>

<p>This smart contract then mints a &quot;meta NFT&quot; for you, which is a combination of the components (ie base and accessory) deposited in the contract. This meta NFT is your avatar.</p>

<h2 id="3mojis-wardrobe-ui">3moji&#39;s Wardrobe UI</h2>
<p>We can add any number of accessories to the avatar (meta NFT). When you add an avatar, the meta NFT metadata and the render is upgraded. This upgrade happens on an off-chain service at the moment, because there is no easy way to process images on-chain. As the Solana eco-system evolves, the rendering mechanism will be moved on-chain.</p>

<p>3moji NFTs are comprised of multiple layers, like any other NFT. However, unlike normal NFTs with immutable traits, upgradeable NFTs allow you to customize and upgrade your NFT without burning or changing its metadata. </p>

<p>Once you have a base head and accessories, you can combine multiple NFTs by sending them to a smart contract. The originals are always preserved and can be taken out of the contract. This allows for seamless upgrades and a booming secondary market. </p>
<p>The combination is called a &quot;meta NFT&quot;. Since each component of the meta NFT is just a regular NFT, the existing infrastructure for marketplaces, rarity etc can be used.</p>
<p>Every time you deposit an NFT in the smart contract, you&#39;ll receive a &quot;receipt NFT&quot; in return. The receipt NFT is proof of ownership for the deposited NFT and can be used to withdraw the NFT from the contract anytime. </p>

How Does 3moji Work?

<h2 id="nfts-are-rigid-and-restrictive">NFTs are rigid and restrictive</h2>
<p>Unlike our self-expression, NFTs don&#39;t evolve. It&#39;s in the name: &quot;non fungible&quot;. We use stickers and memes to talk to our friends. A web2 avatars company called <a href="https://www.bitmoji.com/">Bitmoji</a> (acquired by <a href="https://www.snapchat.com/en-GB">Snapchat</a>) has over 20million users across Web, Android and iOs. </p>
<p>Avatars in social apps, metaverses and games are the ideal use-case for NFTs. But NFTs don&#39;t fit here because of their rigidity. This is where 3moji comes in play.</p>

<h2 id="backstory">Backstory</h2>
<p>After explosion of NFTs last year, I had a hard time understanding the hype. In my head, NFTs were on-chain pointers to some artwork. The pointers proved the ownership of an art. But what special rights did it bring? Unlike real world artwork, NFTs can be copied by anyone.</p>
<p>The only benefit of ownership was the ability to sell it later. Which made me classify NFTs as ponzi schemes, because owning an NFT was beneficial only if you sell it.</p>
<p>I was wrong. My argument is sound but misses the cultural aspect of NFTs. </p>
<h2 id="culture-and-expression">Culture and expression</h2>
<p>Our monkey brains have evolved to form tribes. Staying around people who are like you gives you an environment to thrive. This similarity is what forms the culture. The culture you were born in, guides your self expression - like your accent, your eye-brows, your beard, your aspirations.</p>

<p>This is a simple example of culture influencing expression. But what happens when the size of our tribe goes from 10s to millions?</p>

<p>We are not designed to handle personal connections that internet enables. I was wrong because holding the NFT allowed you to represent yourself. It signalled the universe that you belong to a group. A group that believes that finance should be open and accessible. A group that envisions a decentralised future. <br><br>There is an artwork aspect too, because art is more tangible and easy to explain. But more than art, its expression. That&#39;s the reason why people use NFTs as their avatars. </p>
<h2 id="social-apps-emojis-✨-and-memes">Social apps, emojis ✨ and memes</h2>
<p>The scale of the internet tribe is beyond individual comprehension, emojis and memes evolved as a shared vocabulary. Memes are universal. Emoji&#39;s have hidden meanings that all cultures agree on. It&#39;s like a language of its own ✨.</p>

<p>And this language evolved because of the shared channels we use. Instagram, Whatsapp, Twitter, Discord, Telegram are fertile lands for culture to evolve. These social apps are the new city squares. The difference being anyone from the world can visit the square at an instant.</p>

<p>3moji is an upgradable NFT base avatar system. We want to build the expression engine of the web3 world. To put our messaging forward, our logo showcases the number &quot;3&quot; as a bridge, and an expression as the foundation.</p>

<p>Depending on the context, there are two variations of the the 3moji logo. The dark background with lighter graphic is the preferred version. The &quot;3moji&quot; text can be removed depending on the context.</p>

<p>We set out to create a playful, game like vibe. Joining the dark side was an easy choice as most games have dark backgrounds. We chose shades of vibrant yellow, pink and purple to showcase our vibe. It also helps us connect to Solana as it has similar neon colors.</p>

<p>The 3moji site and app rely on the font <a href="https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Work+Sans">Work Sans by Google</a>, designed by <a href="https://weiweihuanghuang.github.io/">Wei Huang</a>. <p>3moji is an upgradable NFT avatar system where you can change the look of your avatar without changing its metadata, thanks to the <a href="https://metablocks.world/">Meta Blocks</a> protocol.</p>
<h2 id="start-with-base-layers">Start with base layers</h2>
<p>Start out by purchasing a base layer, the cost of which is returned in the form of store credit. For example, if you bought a base layer that costs 1 SOL, you’ll get 1 SOL in-store credit which can be used to buy NFT accessories from the 3moji store.</p>

<p>Once you have your base, it’s time to start buying accessories drops and customize your avatar. You can add a type of NFT accessories at once but not two same types of NFT accessories. For example, you could use a cap NFT and a sunglasses NFT together but not two cap NFTs together.</p>
<p>3moji drops can be either first-party accessories or third-party accessories built by different artists, designers, and projects. Anyone can release their accessories on the 3moji marketplace.</p>

<p>Once you have a 3moji base layer and an avatar you’d like to add on, all you need to do is send them to the Meta Blocks contract via 3moji UI. Once you send it to the contract, you’ll get back the following NFTs in your wallet:</p>
<ol>
<li>Receipt for deposited NFTs</li>
<li>A Meta NFT which is the combined version of the deposited NFTs</li>
</ol>
<p>Both the Meta NFT and the receipt can’t be traded.</p>
<p>The Meta NFT can be used as PFP, and laters as stickers, avatars in supported games/ metaverses, and AR filters.</p>
<p>The receipt NFT can be used to claim the original NFT from the Meta Blocks contract.</p>
